National Centre for Family Literacy - "By using a comprehensive and holistic approach to education, family literacy programmes are making great strides in helping families break the cycle of low literacy, poverty, and hopelessness". This comment was recently made by The National Centre for Family Literacy, which is based in Kentucky, USA. What is Literacy? Janice Dole, Reading Specialist, Utah State Office of Education provides this answer. "In the past, literacy was considered the ability to read and use printed materials at a basic level. As information and technology have shaped our society, the skills to function successfully have gone beyond mere reading. Literacy is a means to a better quality of life." "Today, adults need higher levels of basic skills to function effectively in many areas of their lives, and literacy is defined more broadly to include problem-solving and higher level reasoning skills." "Increasingly higher levels of literacy will be demanded of our students in the coming information age. It is absolutely critical that all children learn how to read and read well if we expect them to function successfully in the twenty-first century." We recommend you read the following article released by the National Centre for Family Literacy, entitled, "Children Learning to Read: Success Vs Failure". Click here for full article
National Institute for Literacy - Created by the National Literacy Act of 1991 by a bipartisan Congressional coalition, the National Institute for Literacy is the response to requests for a federal office whose prime directive would be to engage in work on the issue of literacy in the United States. The primary work of the Institute is "to ensure that all Americans with literacy needs have access to services that can help them gain the basic skills necessary for success in the workplace, family, and community in the 21st century." To that end, the Institute has developed this Web site, which contains information on their programs and services. Persons with an interest in adult literacy and education should find valuable the Equipped for the Future program, which contains content standards for adult education, and the Literacy and Learning Disabilities section, which deals with research into adult learning disabilities. Equally helpful is the literacy directory that contains information about local literacy programs and fact sheets on literacy gleaned from more than 50 research studies. The information is also useful for reference by other countries that are interested in the problem of Literacy. Visit their website Delamere-Pennine Associates promotes the initiative of "Room to Read" an organization with public charity 501(c) (3) status in the United States, and which seeks to intervene early in the lives of children and help provide them with an education and the lifelong gift of literacy. Education and training are two of the most important foundations for the future of any nation, be it the United States of America or developing nations such as in regions of the African Continent. The future development of the quality of life of its citizens, success of business and future prosperity of a nation lies in the quality of its education, training, and the acquiring of life skills. Delamere-Pennine Associates undertakes research into current trends in the field of international education plus we compare resources currently available to teachers and students both in first world countries, and developing countries struggling with the mammoth task of educating and training their citizens in order to advance their useful role in the future progress of that nation. Based on this research, our firm serves as a conduit for leading suppliers of textbooks, manuals and tutorials, to assist in self-educating or classroom teaching. We supply leads for books related to computer and basic business skills, and self-improvement in many fields. The use of instructional videos, CD-ROMs and the Internet are now vital components of any training programme, and we strongly recommend that teachers and students take full advantage of these techniques used in education today. During the past few years our firm has seen the increasing demand for online learning, education and training courses offered over the Internet. Developing countries especially in Eastern and Southern Africa are poised to introduce major steps forward by introducing national programmes through government departments, these schemes being backed by international sponsor and donation funds. The main objective is to make up for the acute shortage of qualified teachers and trainers, plus the current lack of computer hardware and local courseware relevant to the local population. Fortunately the Internet now allows access to career courses and online training modules on an international level, no matter where one lives. To assist in this goal of providing suitable and relevant online learning, our firm, along with experienced educationalists in the United States has established an online training programme known as the "Delamere Institute of Online Learning." The
courses and modules offered are ideally suited for individuals
or groups, and the list of categories will be expanded as
our research and demand for certain fields of training, especially
for employment qualifications, are recognized. For further
